Auto-disposable syringe launched

Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices Limited (HMD) on Tuesday launched India’s first auto disable syringes in the state. The syringes cannot be reused and any attempt to do so would break it. The syringe, Kojak Selinge, has been developed in technical collaboration with Star Syringe of the United Kingdom and is priced at Rs 5.25 per piece for a two milliliter (ml) capacity syringe.

The syringe are available in 0.5 ml, 2 ml, 5 ml and 10 ml capacities. In India, more than 7.8 million people suffer from infections caused due to the use of unsafe syringes, of these 4.75 lakh people die every year as a result of these infections, HMD general Manager (marketing) Pardeep Sareen said. Sareen said that according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) survey, 30 per cent of syringes used for immunization are reused, despite they being the disposable variety. Indian Association of Paediatrics president Dr Y C Mathur said auto disable syringes are the need of the hour, as in many cases disposable syringes are reused. With the state ranking second in the number of estimated HIV positive cases, doctors must pledge to ensure that only auto-disable or non-reusable syringes are used, he said.
