In a
major technological breakthrough, the Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices
Limited (HMD) on Tuesday introduced “KOJAK SELINGE” India’s first
auto-disposable (non-reusable) syringe in Utter Pradesh.
Addressing a press conference, company’s General Manager (Marketing) Pradeep
Sareen said that it was the first time in the history of medical devices that an
auto-disposable syringes had been made. “The syringe cannot be reused after the
first use and any attempt to reuse it causes the plunger to break,” He added.
He said the auto-disposable syringe had already made a substantial contribution
in minimizing incidence of infection arising out of reuse of syringes. “The new
syringe will eliminate the risk of person to person transmission of blood-borne
pathogens such as hepatitis B or HIV,” he pointed out. Claiming that HMD is the
first company in the world to have introduced low cost auto-disposable (AD)
syringe for the general healthcare sector, Mr. Sareen said that as per the World
Health Organisation (WHO) study the cost of injection from an AD syringe was
eight times cheaper than the sterlisable glass syringe and six times cheaper
than the ordinary disposable syringe. The HMD is a leading manufacturer of
disposable syringes and needles in Asia with a turnover of Rs 150 crore and 65
per cent market share in the country. The company produces 1.5 billion syringes
per annum under the brand name of “Dispovan” and “Glassvan.”
Speaking on the occasion, president of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Neeraj
Bora said that the launch of this syringe would be a boon for medical
practitioners and patients. He said that still in India a majority of infections
were caused because of the wrong use of syringe and with a launch of such a
syringe by the HMD the risk of infection could be minimized. He said that it was
good to know that the company was providing completely non-reusable syringe at a
very affordable rate. Priced
at Rs. 5.25 piece for 2 ml, Kojak Selinge is initially available in sizes of
0.5, 2.0 and 5 ml and HMD plans to add other sizes in the near future.
