India's
first 'auto-disable' syringe with an inbuilt system to prevent reuse was on
Tuesday launched in Rajasthan. "It is major technological breakthrough in
medical science as auto-disable (AD) syringes cannot be reused and any attempt
to do so breaks the plunger," Pradeep Sareen, general manager (marketing) of the
Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices told a press conference here. The AD syringe with the brand
name 'Kojak Selinge" would help in minimising infection due to reusage of
disposable syringe presently available in the market, he said.
The mechanism in the AD syringe
works by locking the plunger after a dosage has been administered which
automatically makes it impossible to reuse, Sareen said. The union government has in
principle agreed to make AD syringe mandatory during the mass immunization
campaign in 32 major cities and 16 towns soon, said Sareen
“The union government has in principle agreed to

immunization campaign in 32 major cities and 16
towns soon, “said Sareen. R Sridharan, an officer on
the programme for appropriate technology in health
(PATH), said in India, more than 7.8 million people
suffer from infections caused due to the unsafe
injections practices. Of these, 4.75 lakh people
die. |
